Niagara was mined off the New Zealand coast in June 1940, aboard she had eight tons of gold ingot. The gold was sealed in 265 pinewood boxes - two ingots to a box - The Bank of England commissioned salvage by the United Salvage Syndicate who used the old tramp steamer Claymore with a deep sea diving bell manned by chief diver Johnson, and a team of highly skilled deepwater divers - the bullion was recovered - all that is - minus one bar. Includes a newspaper clipping concerning the death of Captain James William Hed, the man in charge of the salvage. No dust jacket. Green cloth covered end boards.
