Following the suggestion of the US Chamber of Commerce and the people of San Francisco the United States the President William McKinley despatched the US Navy Revenue Cutter 'Bear' and a volunteer crew to rescue eight American whaling ships and crews, nearing starvation, who had become trapped in the Alaskan ice near to Point Barrow. Despite the difficulties involved the 'Bear' managed to returned home ten months later with four of the whaling crews, with no loss to its own compliment of men.
