In 1769 de Bougainville brought to France a native of Tahiti named Aotourou or Mayoa, and after a short stay in Paris this native was sent to Isle of France (Mauritius) so that he might be returned to his own country. Captain Marion du Fresne, of the French Navy, then there, offered to do this at his own expense, provided he was given a store-ship. and also allowed to sea-explore generally. He was placed in command of 'Mascarin', and a second ship, 'The Marquis de Castries', was under Chevalier Du Clesmeur, and they set out from the Isle of France on 18th of October 1771, the Tahitian, dying when at Madagascar. The voyage was continued, New Zealand being reached on 25th May, 1772 and the Bay of Islands on 4th May 1772. There both ships remained for two months, in which time Marion and twenty six of his crew were massacred by the natives. Quarter hide binding marbled end boards. 53pp. 220 x 140 mm.
